Background & Story

I'm currently leading the design systems efforts at Toptal and taking Base DS to the next level.

Starting my design career in 2012, I’ve worked in-house, internationally and remotely on a variety of projects for startups, agencies and fortune 500 companies. Outside of my full-time commitments, I also work with a few clients and help them build a bridge between their users and vision.

I spent the first few years at Netrefer, as a one man team designing interfaces and white-label solutions for leading online casinos. Being the type dabbler in design, led me to narrow my career path and focus on product design. Working in the online casino sector felt wrong and unethical and that’s when I decided for a change and moved from sunny Malta to the cold & booming startup scene in Berlin.

There I took a UI / UX Designer position at Bonial International (an Axel Springer SE subsidiary) and was in charge of the company’s wide web projects. I worked closely with with the product and dev teams in an agile environment to transform the legacy static B2C web product to responsive design.

During a design meetup, I heard about 'Atomic Design' by Brad Frost, and that’s where my design process completely changed. The idea of component based design couldn't have come to my attention at a better time, so I gathered screenshots of all components from the current web and app UI and that’s when I started documenting a design system library with the dev team. The result was a success; greater design ↔ dev collaboration and way less design and development debt that made the whole experience way better for the end user.

I've also worked remotely for Modus Create and collaborated with a number of clients to deliver products with the end-user in mind while meeting business goals. I'm a huge advocate for design systems and have been helping out clients understand the benefits of a design system for any web/mobile product. I'm very much passionate about collaboration and improving communication and at the moment I'm also learning how to setup Jira boards for better design ↔ dev collaboration and transparency within big teams.
